Organic Decaf Tea
The camellia sinensis plant (tea plant) differs in natural caffeine amounts. White teas contain the least amount of caffeine and black contains the most. There are, however, slight variations along the line from white, green, oolong, to black due to the ages of the leaves used. The older leaves and buds contain less caffeine than the younger leaves and stems. However, all of the following teas have been naturally decaffeinated or are naturally caffeine-free.

It has also been proven that decaffeination does not destroy the healthy components of green tea, but reduces the overall content by about half. So, in order to get the same health benefits of green tea you will need to drink about twice as much decaffeinated green tea.
The caffeine levels of tea are typically half of the caffeine levels of a cup of coffee. Despite what many believe, the fermentation of the tea leaves does not affect the caffeine levels in the tea. The process used during production determines how much is released during infusion.
The decaffeination process is rather involved but here is a brief summary of the four methods used to strip caffeine from its natural source:.
Methylene chloride processing uses this chemical to extract caffeine molecules as they bond to it.
Ethyl acetate processing is often labeled "naturally decaffeinated" since ethyl acetate is found in many fruits. Caffeine is removed the same way as with methylene chloride except that ethyl acetate is natural and a solvent.
Carbon Dioxide processing pressure cooks the product with carbon dioxide. It can act as a solvent in this mode and attracts the caffeine molecule to it.
Water processing does not involve any chemicals. Instead, the material is soaked in hot water and the caffeine is leached out as it passes through a carbon filter. The water and product reunite to reabsorb the oils and flavors.
Note that caffeine is never fully removed in any of these methods. But for a product to be labeled "decaffeinated" by United States federal regulations the caffeine levels cannot be above 2.5 percent of the product.
If the tea you love is not offered in a decaffeinated version, no worries. You can decaffeinate tea yourself by steeping it for 30-60 seconds. Then start the brewing again. This will reduce the caffeine level by 80-90%. If decaffeinating the tea yourself it is best to use whole leaf teas. Also, find whole leaf teas that can be steeped several times and retain their quality.
Decaffeinated teas are the perfect choice for pregnant women, children, or for those who like to have a cup of relaxing tea but are sensitive to the stimulating effects of caffeine. There are no known health risks for drinking decaffeinated teas. So there is really no reason why you shouldn't enjoy a cup of a fine decaffeinated tea tonight.
